METROREN

Metroren suspension is a synthetic drug with high activity against anaerobic bacteria. It is also active against several medically important protozoa and parasites, in which the drug acts as a preferential electron acceptor.

Description

Indications
It is used to treat trichomonal infections, amoebic dysentery, giardiasis, gas gangrene, pseudo membranous colitis and various abdominal infections, lung abscesses and dental sepsis, intra-abdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, Central Nervous System (CNS) infections, lower respiratory tract infections, Endocarditis. It is used prophylactically before abdominal surgery.

Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole binds to DNA and causes strand breakage. In addition, it acts as an electron acceptor for flavoproteins and ferredoxins.
Side effects
Nausea, vomiting, unpleasant taste, furred tongue, and gastrointestinal disturbances, rashes, rarely drowsiness, headache, dizziness, ataxia, darkening of urine, erythema multiforme, pruritus, urticaria, angioedema, and anaphylaxis.
Contraindications
Metroren suspension is contraindicated in patients with a prior history of hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives. In patients with trichomoniasis,
Metronidazole is contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Drug interactions
Metronidazole interacts with alcohol because it inhibits aldehyde dehydrogenase and consequently causes a disulfiramlike reaction. It is a weak inhibitor of cytochrome P450.
