Description

Indications
LUMAREN tablets are indicated for the treatment of malaria, caused by all forms of plasmodium including severe malaria caused by multiple drug resistant strains of P.Falciparum.
Pharmacological class
Antiprotozoal
Pharmacological properties
Antimalarial
Mechanism of Action
Artemesinins undergo haem-mediated decomposition of the endo-peroxide bridge to yield carbon-centred free radicals. The resulting carbon-centred free radicals alkylate haem and proteins, particularly in the membranes of the parasite’s food vacuole and mitochondria, causing rapid death.
Side effects
Nausea, vomiting and anorexia, dizziness
Contraindications
LUMAREN is contraindicated in individuals hypersensitive to it. Pregnant women are advised not to use it unless in risk cases of malaria i.e. cerebral malaria. Lumaren should also not be taken during breast-feeding.
Drug interactions
Specific negative drug-drug interactions were not seen. Artemether potentialises the antimalarial activity of other antimalarials.
As grapefruit juice retards the metabolism of some antimalarials, it would be better not to drink grape fruit juice while taking LUMAREN.
