Description
Indications
It is used in palliative treatment of allergic reactions which could either be immediate or delayed hypersensitivity reactions, used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis where they relieve sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal itch and conjunctivitis.
It is also used for management of nausea and vomiting because of its anti-muscarinic properties especially for motion sickness when taken about an hour before travelling.

Mechanism of Action
Promethazine is H1 Receptor antagonist which belongs to a phenothiazine derivative that diminishes the main action of histamines in the body by competitive, reversible blockade of histamine receptors.
Side Effects:
Cardio vascular side effects are more commonly seen. Extra pyramidal effects may occur at high doses.
Contra-indications:
Promethazine HCl contra-indicated in comatose patients especially those who are acutely ill or dehydrated as the patients have an increased incidences of dystonias.
Promethazine HCl should be used with caution in patients with cardio vascular or hepatic complications
Drug interactions
Promethazine HCl Potentiates CNS depression with alcohol, other CNS depressants, caution with MAOIs. May alter hCG pregnancy test results.
