ERYTHROREN

Erythroren suspension (Erythromycin Estolate) is an antibiotic with antibacterial activity used to treat or prevent a wide variety of bacterial infections. Erythromycin is a useful alternative to penicillin in penicillin allergic patients (except meningitis).

Indications
Erythromycin is indicated in campylobacter enteritis, pneumonia, legionnaires’ disease, syphilis, non-gonococcal urethritis, chronic prostatitis, diptheria and whooping cough prophylaxis, acne vugaris and rosacea.

Mechanism of Action
Erythromycin inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 23S rRNA molecule (in the 50S subunit) of the bacterial ribosome blocking the exit of the growing peptide chain of sensitive microorganisms.
Side effects
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea (antibiotic associated colitis reported); urticaria, rashes and other allergic reations; reversible hearing loss reported after large doses; cholestatic jaundice, cardiac effects (including chest pain and arrhythmias), myasthenia like syndrome, Stevens – Johnson syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis also reported.
Contraindication
Erythromycin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to this antibiotic.
Erythromycin is also contraindicated in patients taking terfenadine or astemizole.
Drug interactions
Erythromycin inhibits cytochrome P450 and causes accumulation of theophylline, warfarin and terfenadine. This can result in clinically important adverse effects.
